The Millars Whiskies jug from Arklow is highly sought after by collectors. The jug comes in three colours: green, black, and white.
The Millars Whiskies green jug featured here has text on three of the four sides. One side says ‘Millar’s Wines, A. Millar & Co. Ltd., Dublin,’ another says ‘Millar’s Cordials, A. Millar & Co. Ltd., Dublin,’ and the third side reads ‘Millar’s Whiskies, A. Millar & Co. Ltd., Dublin.’
Adam Millar & Company was a well-known spirits, wine, and cordials merchant in Dublin’s Liberties. They also started producing a blended Irish Whiskey in 1843. Their whiskey was popular until the 1970s.
In addition to their own whiskey, they also bottled for Jameson’s and Roe’s. This was a common practice in Ireland, and many famous Irish whiskies began this way. Jameson’s, for example, didn’t bottle their whiskey officially until 1968; before that, it was only available in barrels.
In 1987, Cooley Distillery acquired the rights to the Millar’s brand. In September 1994, Cooley reintroduced Millar’s Special Reserve Irish Whiskey.
