Millar’s Whiskies

Millar’s Whiskies, Wines & Cordials, Arklow, Circa 1970s

The Millar’s Whiskies jug we’re featuring here comes in three colours: black, green, and white.

The black jug we’re showing has orange text on two of its four sides. One side reads ‘Millar’s Wines & Cordials,’ another says ‘Millar’s Whiskies,’ and the third side has an orange picture of a hand pointing to a star. On the bottom of the jug, you’ll find the makers mark that says ‘Arklow, made in the Republic of Ireland, IRONSIDE.’

Adam Millar & Company was a well-known spirits, wine, and cordials merchant in Dublin’s Liberties. They also started producing a blended Irish Whiskey in 1843. Their whiskey was popular until the 1970s.

In addition to their own whiskey, they also bottled for Jameson’s and Roe’s. This was a common practice in Ireland, and many famous Irish whiskies began this way. Jameson’s, for example, didn’t bottle their whiskey officially until 1968; before that, it was only available in barrels.

In 1987, Cooley Distillery acquired the rights to the Millar’s brand. In September 1994, Cooley reintroduced Millar’s Special Reserve Irish Whiskey.
