This is another collectible that isn’t a pub jug, but it’s a very attractive piece of porcelain: a rare vintage Arklow ‘Kilkenny Cat’ from Arklow Irish pottery, designed by Walter Smithwick.
On the base, it bears the Arklow logo along with the inscription: ‘Kilkenny Cat Series 1, A Walter Smithwick Production’. The dimensions are approximately 195mm high, with a base measuring around 95mm x 66mm. The colour is green, and the Arklow stamp on the base indicates it dates from the 1960s.
Smithwick’s is an Irish red ale-style beer. The Smithwick’s brewery was founded in Kilkenny in 1710 by John Smithwick and remained in the hands of the Smithwick family until 1965, when it was acquired by Guinness, now part of Diageo.
