On view here is a pub jug made for Courvoisier by Arklow Pottery. The stamp on the base suggests it dates from the 1950s or 1960s. This handsome jug features inscriptions on both sides: ‘Courvoisier – The Brandy of Napoleon’ and, on the front, ‘If you can say Courvoisier, you’ll get a better brandy!’.
Courvoisier is a renowned brand of cognac, produced in the town of Jarnac in the Charente region of France. It is the youngest and smallest of the “big four” cognac houses, alongside Hennessy, Rémy Martin, and Martell.
Unlike many of its peers, Courvoisier is considered the most untypical of the big four. While it controls every step of the production process, it does not distil its own spirits, adapts processes for different vintages and regional variations in eaux-de-vie, and has never owned vineyards. In 2019, it exported approximately 1.4 million nine-litre cases of cognac.
