The jug shown here, featuring Gold Leaf Players Navy Cut, is one of two cigarette jugs in our collection made by Arklow.
Players Navy Cut Gold Leaf Tobacco, once made by Imperial Brands (formerly John Player & Sons), evolved into “Player’s Navy Cut” cigarettes. The pack features a sailor wearing a ‘Navy Cut’ cap as its logo.
According to Player’s advertisements, the term “Navy Cut” came from sailors bundling tobacco leaves with string or twine. The bundled tobacco would mature under pressure, and sailors could slice off a portion, or “cut”, when needed. This product was also sold in pipe tobacco form.
